BAHAMAS PUBLIC FORECAST FOR THIS AFTERNOON, TONIGHT AND THE NEXT SIX
(6) DAYS, ISSUED BY THE BAHAMAS DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY AT 12:00
P.M. EDT, SUNDAY, AUGUST 23, 2026. THE NEXT SCHEDULED FORECAST WILL
BE ISSUED AT 6:00 P.M. EDT.

WARNING IN EFFECT: A Heat Advisory remains in effect for the entire
Bahamas as well as the Turks and Caicos Islands. Residents and
visitors across all areas, especially in the Northern and Northwest
Bahamas, should continue to remain hydrated, seek shaded areas and
restrict strenuous outdoor activity between peak hours (between 11 am
– 4pm).

GENERAL SITUATION: Generally stable and hot weather conditions will
prevail across the majority of the island chain today, due to a ridge
of high pressure and a thin plume of Saharan dust. Meanwhile,
lingering moisture and troughing near the Northern Bahamas will
continue to trigger isolated showers and thunderstorms across those
areas through this afternoon, with activity expected to wane later
this evening as high pressure builds. Winds remain gentle to moderate
across most of the country with occasional fresh gusts across the
Southeast Bahamas.

Outlook: The northern extent of a tropical wave is expected to
introduce shower and thunderstorm activity over portions of the
Southeast Bahamas beginning early Monday as the wake treks westward.
High pressure will remain the dominant feature at the surface across
most of the country, maintaining hot and humid conditions. However,
upper-level troughing and increasing moisture will support periods of
showers and thunderstorms across various parts of the island chain.
Two tropical waves are expected to enter the forecast area early this
week, bringing an increase in cloudiness, showers and thunderstorms
through Thursday.

SPECIAL WEATHER NOTES:

Severe Thunderstorm Risk: There is a slight to moderate risk for a
few isolated strong to severe thunderstorms expected across portions
of the Northern Bahamas this afternoon. These storms are capable of
producing strong gusty winds, frequent lightning, heavy downpours,
and waterspout activity. Therefore, the public is urged to remain
updated on all severe weather warnings issued by the Bahamas
Department of Meteorology.

Rip Currents: There is a slight to moderate risk of rip currents
affecting the eastern and southern shorelines of the Southeast
Bahamas. Beachgoers and swimmers are advised to exercise caution when
entering the water.

UV Index: Members of the public are advised to wear protective
clothing and sunscreen and seek shaded areas while outside during
peak sunshine hours (11am – 4pm), as UV indices are expected to be
in the high to extreme range.

Saharan Dust: The level of dust may reach moderate levels which could
impact air quality and hinder visibility at times across the
Northwest Bahamas. Residents, especially those with respiratory
illnesses, should take precautions to safeguard their health.

NORTHERN BAHAMAS
(INCLUDING GRAND BAHAMA, ABACO, BIMINI & ADJACENT WATERS):
SKY CONDITIONS: Partly cloudy with occasional cloudy periods this
afternoon, becoming variably cloudy tonight.
PRECIPITATION: 30 - 40% chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms
this afternoon through this afternoon, decreasing to a 10 – 20%
chance of isolated showers by late evening.
WINDS: South to southwest at 10 knots or less tonight, shifting
southeast to south tonight.

SKY CONDITIONS: Partly to mostly sunny and slightly hazy, becoming
partly cloudy tonight.
PRECIPITATION: 10 to 20% chance of a stray afternoon shower with a
slight chance of a rogue thunderstorm over portions of the extreme
Southeastern Islands.
20 – 40% chance of isolated showers or thunderstorms late tonight
through the early morning hours.
WINDS: Easterly at 15 to 20 knots, shifting northeast to east by
tonight.

TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK: There are currently three (3) areas of
interest being monitored at this time:
1) Northeastern Atlantic: A non-tropical area of low pressure located
a few hundred miles west of the coast of Portugal is producing
limited shower activity. This system has only a slight chance of
acquiring subtropical characteristics later today while it moves
eastward to east-northeastward at 10 to 15 mph toward Portugal and
northwestern Spain.
It has a low (10%) chance of tropical cyclone formation during the
next 48 hours and continuing through the next seven days.
2) Central Subtropical Atlantic (AL95): A broad area of low pressure
located a few hundred miles southeast of Bermuda continues to produce
disorganized shower and thunderstorm activity and has a low (30%)
chance of tropical cyclone formation through the next seven days.
3) Eastern Tropical Atlantic: A tropical wave is expected to move off
the west coast of Africa on Monday, and an area of low pressure could
form in association with the wave early this week. This system will
have a medium (50%) chance of tropical cyclone formation through the
next seven days.
