FXUS64 KSJT 201848 AFDSJT Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Angelo TX 148 PM CDT Wed May 20 2026 ...New SHORT TERM, LONG TERM... .KEY MESSAGES... - Severe storms possible this afternoon and tonight mainly in Crockett county, Concho Valley and I-10 corridor. - Slight chance of excessive rainfall south of I-20 through tonight. - Low rain chances Friday night, then medium to high (30-80%) chances Saturday and Saturday night. && .SHORT TERM... (Today and tonight) Issued at 148 PM CDT Wed May 20 2026 The latest satellite imagery is indicating a stable airmass across much of our area early this afternoon with widespread stratus but some breaks in the clouds. It is more unstable west of our area as scattered thunderstorms have developed across the Permain Basin and Trans Pecos in an area of elevated instability as some mid and upper level lift moves in from the west. Also, temperatures are much cooler with 60s to lower 70s across our area. A somewhat active pattern for tonight and Thursday as an upper level disturbance will move across plus increasing elevated instability and abundant moisture. The Hi-Res models are indicating scattered to numerous thunderstorms mainly this evening through late tonight south of the I-20 corridor. A few storms may be severe across the Northern Edwards Plateau and Irion County. The main hazards will be large hail and damaging winds. A marginal strong to severe storm is possible a little more east of the slight risk area across the Northwest Hill Country and Concho Valley. Also, the high amount of moisture will result in a slight risk of excessive rainfall and possible flash flooding south of the I-20 corridor. For Thursday, expect mainly afternoon scattered thunderstorms with gusty winds and locally heavy rainfall possible. Please keep up with the latest weather information. && .LONG TERM... (Thursday night through next Wednesday) Issued at 148 PM CDT Wed May 20 2026 Rain chances will persist for much of the extended period, along with cooler than normal temperatures for much of the area into next week. A few storms are possible, primarily across the Big Country and eastern portions Friday evening/overnight. The bulk of any severe weather is expected to remain north of the area during this time frame, although cannot rule out a strong to severe storm or two over the Big Country. Rain chances will increase Saturday into Saturday night, as a weak upper trough moves into the region from the west, along with another front that moves in from the north. Severe weather is not anticipated due to weaker shear, but could see some heavier rainfall that may lead to some localized flooding, primarily over eastern sections. Low rain chances will persist into Sunday, then Monday looks mainly dry. Rain chances return again next Tuesday and Wednesday, as another trough to the west begins to affect the region. && .AVIATION... (18Z TAFS) Issued at 1242 PM CDT Wed May 20 2026 Expect mainly MVFR to low end VFR ceilings this afternoon and early evening with widespread stratus, MVFR/IFR conditions returning late tonight.
