FXUS62 KFFC 222326 AFDFFC Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Peachtree City GA 726 PM EDT Sat Aug 22 2026 ...New 00Z Aviation Discussion... .KEY MESSAGES... - A surface boundary will spark additional showers and thunderstorms this afternoon across portions of south-central Georgia. - Drier conditions on Sunday will be followed by a return to low daily rain chances for most from Tuesday onward. - Seasonal, less oppressive heat returns to North Georgia today and areawide by Sunday. && .SHORT TERM... (This afternoon through Sunday) Issued at 229 PM EDT Sat Aug 22 2026 An upper level longwave trough is extending from the central Great Lakes towards the south Georgia coast. As the axis of this trough continues to dig southeastward towards the Atlantic Coast, northwesterly upper flow behind the trough is progressively building over the forecast area. The movement of this trough is also advancing a surface frontal boundary further to the southeast. Dewpoints in areas behind the front are in the low to mid 60s while dewpoints ahead of the front are in the low to mid 70s. With temperatures rising into the low 90s this afternoon, scattered thunderstorms will be possible in east-central Georgia where more moist air remains ahead of the front. This evening, a weak wave will traverse the northwesterly flow aloft, advancing a secondary cold front towards far north Georgia. For the most part, precipitation associated with this front should remain north and west of the forecast area, though isolated showers and thunderstorms cannot be ruled out in the far northern tier from sunset through midnight. Largely benign weather conditions are expected on Sunday. The morning will begin with low temperatures in the mid to upper 60s in north Georgia and low 70s in central Georgia. Patchy fog will be possible in the far northern tier in the early morning, dissipating shortly after sunrise. Aside from highs in the 80s in the far northeastern mountains, highs will be in the low 90s in north Georgia and mid 90s in central Georgia. Drier air will keep Heat Advisory criteria from being reached. A few isolated diurnally driven storms will be possible in the southern portion of our area during the peak heating hours, largely along and south of a line from Columbus to Macon. && .LONG TERM... (Monday morning through next Friday) Issued at 229 PM EDT Sat Aug 22 2026 Generally quiet weather is expected for the first half of the long term with a dry airmass in place. We'll also get a break from thunderstorms during the afternoon as well until Wednesday when winds become more southerly and we start to pull moisture back in from the Gulf. After Wednesday, a trough in the upper level flow will bring back the chances for afternoon thunderstorms. The most potent upper level dynamics will remain north of us, as the center of the low will remain in the Great Lakes region. Given slowly increasing temperatures however, we won't lack instability during the afternoon. This pattern will remain in place through the weekend. && .AVIATION...
