DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 1100 AM HST (2100 UTC), the center of Hurricane Lala was located near latitude 31.0 North, longitude 172.7 West. Lala is moving toward the northwest near 7 mph (11 km/h) and this motion is expected to continue for the next several days. Maximum sustained winds are near 75 mph (120 km/h) with higher gusts. Gradual weakening is forecast during the next several days, and Lala's winds could decrease below hurricane force tonight. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 60 miles (95 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 255 miles (405 km). The estimated minimum central pressure is 981 mb (28.97 inches). HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- SURF: Large surf associated with Lala will affect western sections of the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument for the next couple of days. These large waves could inundate some low-lying atolls, especially from Maro Reef to Kure Atoll. DISCUSSION AND OUTLOOK ---------------------- At 1100 AM HST (2100 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Moke was located near latitude 14.9 North, longitude 151.1 West. Moke is moving toward the west-northwest near 12 mph (19 km/h) and this general motion is expected during the next several days. On the forecast track, the center of the storm is expected to pass south of the Big Island of Hawaii on Sunday, then well south of the smaller main Hawaiian Islands early next week. Maximum sustained winds remain near 50 mph (85 km/h) with higher gusts. Little change in strength is expected today, but gradual weakening is forecast to begin on Sunday. HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND ---------------------- Key messages for Tropical Storm Moke can be found in the Tropical Cyclone Discussion under AWIPS header HFOTCDCP3 and WMO header WTPA43 PHFO. WIND: Gusty winds are expected across the Hawaiian Islands late tonight and Sunday, especially in areas of high terrain. RAINFALL: Moke is expected to produce rainfall totals of 5 to 10 inches with maximum amounts of 15 inches across the Big Island. Rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches of rain are expected on eastern Maui. These rainfall amounts may produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides for the windward and southeast Big Island, especially in steep terrain and over areas that were affected recently by Lala. Across western Maui and the remainder of the islands, moisture drawn northward from Tropical Storm Moke may bring up to 1 or 2 inches of rain.
